World War Z racconta di un’epidemia globale che trasforma gli uomini in esseri mangiatori di carne, zombi per l’appunto. Il romanzo è raccontato come una dettagliatissima ricerca governativa della Commissione Posbellica che avrebbe intervistato sopravvissuti alla catastrofe a dieci anni di distanza dall’apice della crisi.

Alcuni di voi forse avranno letto il libro "Manuale per sopravvivere agli zombi" di Max Brooks. Brooks, oltre ad essere il figlio di un certo Mel, è l'autore dei cult books citato (edito in Italia da Einaudi) e del relativo seguito World War Z - An Oral History of the Zombie War (ancora inedito in Italia). Vi avevamo comunicato che ad Hollywood il progetto di un film ispirato proprio a World War Z si stava concretizzando; e stiamo parlando un prodotto hollywoodiano di serie A e non un prodotto di nicchia destinato solo ai patiti dei non morti.
Il regista dietro al progetto è Marc Foster, che arriva direttamente dal bondiano Quantum of Solace mentre lo sceneggiatore responsabile dello script è Matthew Michael Carnahan (Leoni per Agnelli e The Kingdom). A produrre per Paramount ci sarà addirittura Brad Pitt con la sua casa di produzione Plan B. Ebbene, Variety riporta la notizia che lo studios avrebbe rinnovato le opzioni riguardanti i diritti di sfruttamento cinematografico del libro. Quindi, prima o poi, pare proprio che questo zombi movie vedrà la luce.

Brad Pitt sarà il protagonista di World War Z

Dopo aver rinnovato l'opzione, qualche mese fa, su World War Z, ora la Paramount Pictures deciso finalmente chi sarà il protagonista dell'horror "epico" tratto dal romanzo di Max Brooks e sul quale all'inizio del 2009 Marc Foster era al lavoro attivamente.

Intervistando Brooks in anticipazione della sua partecipazione al Comic-Con di San Diego oggi, MTV ha saputo dall'autore che Brad Pitt ha un accordo per interpretare il protagonista. La casa di produzione dell'attore, la Plan B, aveva per prima opzionato il film nel 2007.

L'intenzione della compagnia è quella di uscire con il film nel 2012.

Brooks ha anche rivelato che la Paramount ha opzionato anche le graphic novel The Zombie Survival Guide e The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks.

Il libro, intitolato World War Z: La guerra mondiale degli zombie, è strutturato come relazione scritta da un ricercatore dieci anni dopo che un'enorme guerra di zombie ha portato l'umanità sull'orlo dell'estinzione. Il ricercatore attraversa il mondo raccogliendo le testimonianze dei superstiti: dal villaggio cinese dove l'epidemia ha avuto origine, all'estremo nord dove alcune comunità hanno trovato rifugio nel freddo delle foreste, all'Africa, dove le barriere naturali hanno assicurato la salvezza dell'umanità.

La sceneggiatura è stata scritta da J. Michael Straczynski e poi rimaneggiata da Matthew Michael Carnahan.

Si chiama Brooks, ma non fa ridere come suo padre Mel, il regista di Frankenstein Junior (1974). Al contrario, Max Brooks è forse il massimo esperto mondiale di zombi. O almeno l’unico che abbia scritto un Manuale per sopravvivere agli zombi (Einaudi) o compilato un reportage immaginario - World War Z - scritto durante la terza guerra mondiale, quella combattuta dai «non morti», appunto.

Perché ha deciso di scrivere di zombie?
«Semplice: gli zombie mi hanno sempre terrorizzato. Mi spaventavano a morte sia i film di George Romero sia quelli di Dario Argento. Ma non si tratta solo di questo. Gli zombie hanno in sé una natura apocalittica. Le storie di zombie in qualche modo parlano della fine del mondo. È questo a interessarmi».
È questa chiave apocalittica a spiegare perché piacciono tanto ai lettori e agli spettatori?
«Io penso che viviamo in un’epoca davvero piena di incertezze. La gente è molto preoccupata riguardo al suo futuro: siamo nel mezzo di una recessione economica, c’è il terrorismo, il riscaldamento globale. E anche a guerre non scherziamo... Sono tutte paure troppo reali per rifletterci davvero. Se usiamo i non morti riusciamo a pensare all’apocalisse attraverso una metafora tutto sommato “rassicurante”.
Ma se ci fosse davvero un’epidemia di zombie, sopravviveremmo?
«Dipende dalla situazione interna delle varie nazioni. I Paesi in cui la popolazione fosse capace di mantenere la calma e l’unità d’intenti potrebbero riuscire a cavarsela. Se invece prevalessero la divisione, la cattiva organizzazione e il panico, non ci sarebbe scampo».
Essendo italiano, sono felice che gli zombie non esistano. Esisterà però una versione cinematografica del suo libro. Sta seguendo i lavori?
«In questo caso sono solo uno spettatore. Ho finito il mio compito scrivendo il miglior libro che potevo. Ora lascio che siano Brad Pitt e la sua produzione a farne il miglior film di zombie che possono».
Il genere funziona, sono in arrivo anche nuove serie tv come The walking dead...
«Beh, la popolarità genera denaro e il denaro genera popolarità... E, come diciamo in America, lo show va avanti».
Ha visto questi nuovi telefilm e pellicole?
«Ne ho viste molte. E alcune sono davvero buone. Ma io continuo a pensare che Zombi di Romero sia ancora il migliore di tutti i tempi».

World War Z, based on the novel by Max Brooks, has been in development for around two years now. Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster is still attached to direct the film, which centers on a UN bureaucrat named Gerry Lane, who in the aftermath of a world wide Zombie epidemic is asked to compile a complete report on the incident. Brad Pitt is producing, and last summer he decided he also wanted to star, which pleased everyone involved.
With Marc Forster in post-production on Machine Gun Preacher (starring Gerard Butler and Michelle Monaghan) World War Z was expected to be his next project, however it appears unless Paramount finds a co-financier the movie won’t be happening at all.

The film currently has a price tag of more than $125 million, and the studio is fervently searching for a partner to share the risk. Our sources tell us that if they can’t find one, it’s likely that Paramount will pull the plug on the adaptation of the Max Brooks book.
Insiders say an eleventh-hour effort is being made to court frequent Paramount co-financier David Ellison (Mission: Impossible IV, Top Gun II) as well as another, unspecified investor. Paramount Film Group president Adam Goodman insists to Vulture, “We’re really committed to making a big, kick-ass giant movie with Marc Forster and Brad Pitt.” Pressed on whether the studio would move forward without a financial partner, Goodman declined to elaborate, saying it was too early to tell.

Gli appassionati di zombie movie (e posso garantire che sono tanti) non saranno felici di sapere che l’adattamento firmato da Max Brooks del famoso romanzo World War Z, progetto sognato niente meno che da Brad Pitt e dal regista Marc Foster (Quantum of Solace) sembra destinato a non venire mai realizzato. A quanto pare la Paramount non sarebbe disposta a scucire un assegno da 125 milioni di dollari per finanziare l’intera produzione.
Ma non tutto è perduto. La Major infatti è alla ricerca di un co-finanziatore che possa contribuire a realizzare il film, oppure si potrebbe discutere di un ridimensionamento del budget, ma a queste condizioni il film non avrà futuro.

‘World War Z’ Appears to Have New Life at Paramount

There are a hell of a lot of zombie movies coming in the next year or two — so many that it almost seems ridiculous to get excited over one more. But when that one is an adaptation of a well-liked novel and has Brad Pitt set to star, it’s a different story. The film adaptation of Max Brooks‘ novel World War Z was recently said to be nearly dead, but now may have financing set, and is gearing up to shoot as soon as June.
Let’s skip right over the obvious joke about a zombie movie coming back to life and get to the details. Skydance Productions, that being the company headed by David Ellison, who was a key financier for Paramount films True Grit and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, is the possible savior. The company’s involvement has been possible over recent weeks, and Deadline reports Mr. Ellison and “as many as two other financiers” are seriously in talks to finance the film, which is quickly gearing up to shoot. (Paramount holds a short and expensive option on the film — the company’s second option on it — so likely wants to move on it fast, especially if Brad Pitt is still willing to sign.)

Marc Forster is still set to direct. Will this still be a PG-13 affair, which was recently reported as a key factor? Right now we don’t know, but it still seems likely.

(But if Sucker Punch can be PG-13 and still be rife with creepy overtones of sexual threat, coercion and rape, then this movie might work as a PG-13, too.)

David and his sister Meghan Ellison are becoming two of the most important financiers in the business. He’s working closely with Paramount andin addition to the films mentioned above is also set to pay for a big chunk of the Top Gun sequel, should it happen. Meanwhile, her Annapurna Productions is more on the arthouse side of things, with financing being devoted to films like Inherent Vice, The Master and The Wettest County in the World.

Notizia | 30/03/2011 ( ore 11.31 ) : Nei giorni scorsi, si erano diffuse delle preoccupanti notizie circa il film World War Z, adattamento dell'omonimo libro di Max Brooks (il figlio di Mel, nonché brillante autore del Saturday Nightl Live), già autore del cult books Manuale per Sopravvivere agli Zombie (edito in Italia da Einaudi). I 115 milioni di $ di budget previsti stavano spaventando i possibili finanziatori di Paramount, nonostante la presenza di una mega-star come Brad Pitt e di un regista di peso come Marc Forster (Neverland, Vero come la finzione, 007 Quantum of Solace).
Ma Dead Line porta ora una lieta novella: David Ellison e la sua Skydance, insieme a due altri finanziatori, dovrebbero fornire il denaro necessario e la produzione della pellicola dovrebbe partire addirittura a giugno. SCOOP: World War Z Going Ahead, Cinematographer Prepping At Studio Right Now
Marc Forster‘s film of World War Z appears to be on the absolute tip of the cusp of the verge of crossing the line and entering production. Right as we speak, the film’s cinematographer is busy prepping at one of London’s big film studios.

The DP in question is Robert Richardson, who recently wrapped Martin Scorsese’s Hugo Cabret down at Shepperton. This time he will be working out of another one of our big production bases, over at Elstree. Amongst Richardson’s other credits are Kill Bill, Natural Born Killers and Eight Men Out. He’s commonly referred to as a “stylist” and I can certainly see why.

I knew Richardson was going to shoot the picture because his agency put it on his CV, but I was certainly a little surprised to learn just now that he’s already got his light meter out.

It’s nice to see work pressing ahead like this when, just a few weeks ago, the project seemed to be at real risk of collapse. We’d personally confirmed since then that the film was going to go into production this year, but if Richardson’s business is anything to judge by, they’re into bona fide pre-production and cameras could roll as soon as next month, perhaps even later this month.

World War Z, if you do not know, will be based upon the book by Max Brooks. It’s the one subtitled “An Oral History Of The Zombie War” and if you have even a fleeting interest in perambulatory cadavers, especially those with carnivorous predilections, you owe it to yourself to nab a copy.

'World War Z' Casts 'The Killing's Mireille Enos As Brad Pitt's Wife

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures, once shaky about the prospects of the Marc Forster-directed zombie extravangza World War Z, is now on track to make the picture this summer. I'm told that Mireille Enos, star of the AMC hit series The Killing, is in talks to play Karin Lane, the wife of Gerard Lane, the character played by Brad Pitt in the adaptation of the Max Brooks book. In The Killing, she plays Sarah Linden, the homicide detective trying to solve the murder of Rosie Larsen. This will be the first major-studio starring role for Enos, who starred for three seasons on HBO's Big Love. She's repped by Innovative and Authentic.

There had been speculation that Paramount would not bite on the Plan B-produced WWZ because it has a $125 million budget. But as Deadline reported, the studio brought in a couple of risk-sharing partners that will include David Ellison's Skydance. That cleared the way for the movie version of the book that looks at the aftermath of a global zombie war 10 years after the conflict, with a researcher for the UN Postwar Commission interviewing survivors in countries that were decimated by flesh-eaters. It was thorough, and a thoroughly creepy read. Matt Carnahan wrote the most recent draft of the script, after earlier drafts by Michael J. Straczynski.

Brad Pitt trova moglie nel bel mezzo dell’apocalisse degli zombie

Mirelle Enos, attrice vista nelle serie Big Love e The Killing, affiancherà Brad Pitt in World War Z. La pellicola è tratta da un romanzo di Max Brooks (figlio del mitico Mel) e sarà diretta da Marc Forster (regista di Quantum of Solace).
Protagonista è un ricercatore delle Nazioni Unite incaricato di viaggiare in lungo e in largo per capire bene gli effetti dell’apocalisse degli zombie, che ha avuto inizio dieci anni prima. Pitt sarà il ricercatore, mentre la Enos avrà il ruolo della moglie.

Israeli Actress Mali Levi to Star Opposite Brad Pitt

The highly anticipated movie World War Z has just added a new cast member: Israeli model and actress Mali Levi, according to the Jerusalem Post.
The movie -- which stars Brad Pitt -- is based on the 2006 best-selling novel of the same name by Max Brooks (son of Mel Brooks). The post-apocalyptic novel is a follow-up to Brook’s previous book, The Zombie Survival Guide. In World War Z, Brooks is an agent for the United Nations who’s responsible for publishing a report following a brutal zombie war that happened a decade earlier.

In the book, Israel is one of the countries that best dealt with the zombie apocalypse. The Jerusalem Post reports that Levi will be playing a woman who testifies about Israel’s successful techniques for surviving the zombie apocalypse. The article claims that producers for the film -- which will be directed by Marc Foster (Quantum of Solace, Finding Neverland) -- were considering a number of actresses for the role, including Gal Gadot (who can be seen in the box office hit Fast Five). Levi’s acting credits include the hit Israeli soap opera called Our Song and the Israeli version of The Office.
